Multiple generations of Australians at risk of measles − how protected is your generation?

A landmark NCIRS-led study has identified immunity gaps across multiple generations of Australians, with an estimated 1.7 million people susceptible (lacking sufficient immunity) to measles in 2019. The findings come as large outbreaks continue overseas and imported measles cases continue to be reported in Australia. 

Researchers estimated that almost 7 in 100 Australians were susceptible to measles. They warn that, because the study evaluated population immunity in 2019, susceptibility may now be even higher, particularly given declines in childhood vaccination coverage since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Measles susceptibility was not evenly distributed across the population. Instead, levels of protection varied markedly between birth cohorts (generations), reflecting differences in historical childhood vaccination programs and exposure to naturally occurring measles virus.

Check your records

People born during or since 1966 should make sure they have received 2 doses of a measles-containing vaccine. If you're unsure about your vaccination status, check your vaccination records or speak with your immunisation provider. 

Consider catch-up vaccination

If you’ve missed recommended doses or are unsure whether you’ve received 2 doses, catch-up vaccination is recommended. If vaccination history cannot be confirmed, additional measles-containing vaccine doses can be given safely. Measles vaccination is available free of charge for eligible people through the NIP and state and territory vaccination programs.

Review your vaccination status before travelling overseas

Measles continues to circulate globally, and international travel remains the primary pathway for measles importation into Australia.

Protect infants and vulnerable people

Keeping vaccinations up to date helps protect infants who are too young to be fully vaccinated and supports Australia’s measles elimination status. If travelling overseas with an infant aged 6 to 11 months, speak with your immunisation provider about whether an early first dose of a measles-containing vaccine is advised. Infants vaccinated before 12 months still need 2 further measles-containing vaccine doses according to the routine schedule.
