        Annual Immunisation Coverage Report 2020

        2021

The Annual Immunisation Coverage Report 2020 is the 14th in the series, and the first to present adolescent and adult vaccination data from the Australian Immunisation Register, in addition to childhood vaccination data. The report shows 'fully vaccinated' coverage increased at all three age milestones in all children and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children between 2019 and 2020. Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage in adolescents by 15 years of age continued to increase, as did recorded influenza vaccination coverage in adults. However, recorded zoster vaccination coverage among older adults remained low. The report also shows persisting issues with timeliness of childhood vaccination, particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and socioeconomically disadvantaged children, and those living in remote areas.

A survey of pharmacist vaccination reporting to the Australian Immunisation Register

        2021

First-ever report to provide data on pharmacists' vaccination reporting practices in Australia. Authors from NCIRS conducted a survey of community pharmacies providing vaccination services in June-July 2020. A large majority of vaccinations administered by pharmacists were recorded in the Australian Immunisation Register, although this is likely an overestimate of true reporting rates. The study found completeness of reporting was higher among those who used automated reporting methods; recorded the patient’s Medicare card number; and/or administered National Immunisation Program vaccines. The report also highlights barriers to reporting vaccinations by pharmacists and provides recommendations for improving the reporting rates, especially as pharmacists begin to administer COVID-19 vaccines.

Impact evaluation of Australian national HPV vaccination program

        2021

NCIRS evaluation of the impact of the national HPV vaccination program has found that HPV vaccination coverage is high and there has been a substantial reduction in the burden of HPV-related disease since the introduction of the vaccine in Australia. It was also found that adverse events following immunisation with HPV vaccine have been predominantly mild and transient in nature, with the vaccine safety record similar to that of other vaccines on the National Immunisation Program. The evaluation makes a range of recommendations to enhance the program and further improve vaccine coverage and equity.

COVID-19: Impact on routine childhood vaccination uptake in Australia

        2020

This report shows analysis of the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and associated response measures on routine childhood immunisation using Australian Immunisation Register data. There was no evidence of substantial impact on vaccination uptake in children at national or state/territory level, for vaccinations due up to July 2020, which is a reflection of consistent messaging from health authorities about maintaining routine immunisations during the pandemic and providing COVID-19 safe vaccination opportunities.

Key findings - Annual Immunisation Coverage Report 2019

        2020

This summary report presents key findings from the Annual Immunisation Coverage Report 2019 which focussed on changes in immunisation coverage among all children aged <5 years at key milestone ages of 12, 24 and 60 months between 2018 and 2019. The summary report shows 'fully vaccinated' coverage at 12, 24 and 60 months; individual vaccine/antigen coverage; MMR and influenza vaccination coverage; and vaccination coverage among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. This report also highlights that although timeliness of vaccination issues persisted in 2019, the disparity in ‘fully vaccinated’ coverage between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and all children decreased at 24 months.
